Warne Marsh had one of the most unique voices in jazz. On a rare trip to Northern Europe, Marsh joined up with fellow saxophonist Lee Konitz to play a series of club dates which delighted European jazz aficionados. Their December 27, 1975 show before yet another full-capacity crowd, resulted in this recording by Storyville Records, Live At The Montmartre Club - Volume 2. Here the band weave their melodic way around Wame's and Lee's "glorious, spontaneous" counterpoints. The original liner notes state how the crowd was mesmerized by the two saxophonists' translation of Johann Sebastian Allegro compositions. Of note, other outstanding performances include Foolin' Myself and Dam That Dream. With a back-up band that included Dave Cliff on guitar, Peter Ind on a 400 year-old bass, and Alan Levitt on drums, Live At The Montmartre Club swings with one of the most inventive quintets ever heard by European audiences. Mobile Fidelity has brought out the warmth and presence of the original vinyl recording.
